Choosing where to stay is an important part of your study experience in Malta. The best solution does not depend on price alone: the length of your stay, the school you attend, location, age, the level of independence you want and the kind of experience you are looking for can make one type of accommodation much more suitable than another. Hotels

For a short stay, a hotel can be a particularly convenient option. However, many of our students also choose to stay in a hotel for several weeks, as some properties have kitchenettes. inMalta has selected hotels in strategic locations, close to English language schools and essential services, allowing students to combine lessons and free time easily, and has brought them together in the Purple Hotels Collection. St. Julian’s, in particular, offers easy access to schools, restaurants, bars, shops and some of Malta’s liveliest areas. Hotels are particularly suitable for those who value comfort, privacy and independence. They can also be a good choice for those coming to Malta as a couple, those who want to combine an English course with a holiday, or those who plan to work online for part of the day. Campus

Living on a Campus means immersing yourself completely in student life. The Campus is designed for students and combines accommodation, communal spaces, areas for studying and relaxing, and a wide range of services within the same complex. It is a particularly interesting option for those who want to spend a few weeks or several months in a young, international environment. The Campus offers a gym, swimming pool, study and relaxation areas, as well as numerous shops and services. Students can buy food and drinks at the large Campus supermarket and use the shared kitchen on their floor. They can also make use of the facilities available within the complex and take part in events organised during the week. One of the main advantages is the opportunity to live in an environment where meeting other students is easy. This is why the Campus is much more than simply a place to stay. It can become part of your language-learning experience. Rooms are cleaned once a week, while bed linen and towels are changed every two days.

Host Family

Living with a host family allows you to experience Malta from a completely different perspective. It means becoming part of the everyday life of a local family, discovering Maltese habits and traditions and having more opportunities to use English in a family environment. Host family accommodation is not only for younger students. It can be chosen by students of any age who want an experience that brings them closer to the local culture. You can generally choose a single room or share a twin room with another student. The families offered are selected with reliability, safety and their ability to welcome students in mind, and are authorised by the Malta Tourism Authority to host students. Before you arrive, you can also receive information about the family you will be staying with: their address, the names and contact details of your hosts, their occupations, whether they have children or pets, their habits and lifestyle. This means you can get to know your host family better even before arriving in Malta. Living with a family, however, also requires a degree of adaptability. You are not staying in a hotel or in a completely independent apartment: you are entering someone else’s home and everyday life. There may therefore be rules regarding communal areas, schedules, use of the washing machine or other aspects of domestic life. But this is precisely what makes the experience different. Host family accommodation normally includes half board: breakfast and dinner. Students do not normally use the kitchen independently. It is therefore important to respect meal times and the habits of your host family. Before booking, you can inform us of any food intolerances, special requirements or allergies, including allergies relating to pets. Rooms are cleaned and bed linen and towels are changed weekly, unless different arrangements need to be agreed directly with the family.

Independent Apartments

Choosing an apartment means experiencing Malta with greater freedom and independence. It is particularly suitable for those who do not want to stay in a hotel, on Campus or with a host family and prefer to organise their everyday life independently while studying. Apartments give you a real home: a bedroom to stay in, communal areas and a kitchen where you can prepare your own meals. It is a simple, flexible option and particularly appealing to those who want to feel at home even when they are away from home, but above all to those looking for maximum independence. An independent apartment is also an interesting option for those coming to Malta as a couple, with friends or with their family.

Shared Apartments

For those travelling alone, one option is to share an apartment with other students. In this case, you have your own room, either single or shared depending on the option selected, while the kitchen, living room and other communal areas are shared with the other guests. Sharing can help keep costs lower than other types of accommodation while also providing opportunities to meet people during your stay. Sharing an apartment, however, also means sharing everyday life. Preparing dinner, organising communal areas, doing the shopping or simply meeting up in the evening after lessons can become opportunities to socialise and, when the other guests are international, to continue using English outside school. A single room offers greater privacy and is particularly suitable for those who want their own personal space to study and relax. A shared room can be a more affordable and sociable option, particularly for those travelling with a friend or who want to share more of the experience. Choosing an apartment also means taking greater responsibility for managing your everyday life. You do not have the services of a hotel or the domestic organisation of a host family. It is therefore particularly suitable for adult and young adult students who are looking for independence and want to experience Malta more autonomously. For stays of several weeks or several months, this freedom can become one of the most enjoyable aspects of the experience.

And what about very long stays?

The length of your stay completely changes the way accommodation should be chosen. A solution that is extremely convenient for a few weeks may not be the most suitable for several months. If you want to remain in Malta for six months or more — for example, if you are coming for an English course but are thinking of staying in Malta after the course has finished — it may be worth booking only one or two weeks in a hotel with inMalta and then finding a room or apartment independently or with the assistance of an estate agent. It is also the most economical solution: once you are in Malta, you will be in a much better position to assess every aspect of your stay. This is why we always recommend that those planning to settle in Malta for a longer period use temporary accommodation initially and then look independently for more permanent accommodation once they have arrived on the island.

What is the best accommodation in Malta? There is no single answer that works for everyone. If you are staying for a short period and are mainly looking for comfort, privacy and freedom, a hotel may be the simplest solution. If you are travelling with your family, as a couple or have specific requirements, you can consider an independent apartment. If keeping to a budget is particularly important and you are happy to share your accommodation, you can consider a shared apartment with other students.
